Why Ruby not Glass?

Rubies, whether natural or lab-grown, are made of corundum (aluminum oxide, Al₂O₃), which has an exceptionally high tolerance for heat. Corundum’s melting point is around 2,040°C (3,704°F), so rubies can withstand extreme temperatures before they’d start to break down or melt. This makes them one of the toughest gemstones thermally, second only to diamond in terms of overall durability among commonly known gems.

In practical terms:

  • Short-term exposure: Rubies can handle temperatures up to about 1,000–1,200°C (1,832–2,192°F) without significant damage, though prolonged heat at this level might cause subtle changes like color fading or cracking if there are inclusions or flaws (more common in natural rubies than lab ones).

  • Thermal shock: Rapid temperature changes (e.g., going from hot to cold quickly) can fracture rubies, especially natural ones with internal stresses or inclusions. Lab rubies, being more uniform, are generally less prone to this.

So, rubies can take a lot of heat—far more than most real-world scenarios would throw at them— while glass tends to be the opposite.
